Spaces Rapidly Taking Over Vancouver’s Skyline

Three major deals signal accelerating demand for co-working spaces in Vancouver

Spaces, an Amsterdam-born creative workspace, announces three large office lease deals in the Vancouver market, working in partnership with Colliers International, a global leader in commercial real estate services. The co-working company has signed in three major locations: Gastown, Granville and Mt. Pleasant, totaling 145,000 square feet of vibrant and collaborative co-working and shared office space.

Co-working spaces “The shift in the way people are working is driving our massive expansion in Vancouver,” said Wayne Berger, Executive Vice President, Spaces. “Our goal is to secure unique and aspirational office space and buildings in Vancouver so we can turn them into collaborative and inspiring work environments for start-ups, global enterprise partners, entrepreneurs, innovators and leaders. We are focusing on growing in top-class buildings in prime locations in Vancouver so we can give our community a place to network, create and grow.”

A thriving hub for modern enterprises, Spaces will open its first location in Gastown in summer 2018. The five-storey, 35,000-square-foot building at 151 West Hastings Street combines Romanesque architecture with a more modern style, surrounded by designer boutiques, art galleries and gourmet restaurants.

On Granville Street, Spaces has signed a lease for 70,000 square feet in the historic Tom Lee Music Building, occupying the entire office component of the building along prominent main floor retail space. It is scheduled to open October 2018 and will become the home to hundreds of forward thinkers, innovators and game changers.

The final deal was signed in Mt. Pleasant in Great Northern Way Campus, steps away from the new Emily Carr University and home to Vancouver’s burgeoning tech and start-up scene. Spaces will occupy two floors representing 40,000 square feet in this first-class building. It is scheduled to open at the end of 2018.

“These major deals with Spaces make it clear that the co-working revolution is here and it’s the future of office space,” said Colin Scarlett, Executive Vice President with Colliers International in Vancouver, who helped Spaces secure its locations. “We are seeing a fundamental shift in how companies are looking at space and Colliers is excited to be at the forefront of this adventure with Spaces.”

“We see the city of Vancouver as an incredible ecosystem for business and the growth and acceleration of new ideas,” Berger commented. “With the demand for non-traditional office space and the desire to be part of a powerful community, Spaces gives these companies the opportunity to thrive in a supportive and engaging workspace.”

Spaces has 110 locations in 25 countries with a strong presence in Europe, the U.S. and Australia. The workspace pioneer expanded into Canada last fall with its first location in Toronto. It continues to expand rapidly in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, and will continue its Canadian growth over the next year.
