Colliers Helping Osprey Wings Find Their New Horizon

Osprey Wings New Horizon Hero

In the northern hamlet of Missinipe on Otter Lake in central Saskatchewan, Osprey Wings is a local air service that keeps the community connected.

Smartphones. Email. Sending a postcard. There are many ways to stay connected.

In Central Saskatchewan, one of the key pieces of connecting remote communities in the region is Osprey Wings. This family-owned and operated premier air charter service has been the providing services to the tourism, mining, fire suppression, and public service sector for over 50 years.

However, there comes a time when every great aviator must hang up their wings.

Where Expertise Meets Passion

Colliers’ Unique Properties Vice President, Alan Johnson is a commercial real estate expert of over 20 years, with experience in consulting and valuation, particularly with unique properties. It also helps that he is an aviation enthusiast, a private pilot, and comes from a family of aviators.

Working with Alan are Colliers advisors Brian Peberdy, Vice President and Glen Paziuk, Vice President, who are known in Saskatchewan for their extensive market knowledge and reputation for premier client service in commercial real estate.

Working with Osprey Wings, Alan, Brian, and Glen brought their expert advisory service to help the Thompson family list their iconic air service. Selling their entire business, including properties and assets, makes for a unique challenge in finding the right buyer to carry-on the Osprey Wings legacy.

The Legacy in Saskatchewan’s Skies

Osprey Wings was founded by Garry and Bonnie Thompson in the 1960’s to service fly-in fishing camps with their first purchase of a Luscombe aircraft.

Since then, their De Havilland centric fleet has grown to 9 aircraft including   Beavers, Turbo Otters, and Twin Otters, all of which are outfitted for wheel, float and ski operation. These iconic Canadian aircraft are especially suited toward the challenges of northern flying and have a proven history in aviation.

Northern Saskatchewan’s economy grew with uranium exploration and mining demanding transportation to these remote communities, on top of the desire for adventurers to embrace what the rich wilderness had to offer.

Outside of the major Canadian carriers, air transportation within Saskatchewan is serviced by a few main operators that generally provide either scheduled or chartered airport to airport service or general charter service. There are only a handful of float operators with Osprey Wings having the largest fleet and providing the greatest level of provincial coverage.

In the Clouds & On the Ground

Osprey Wings’ main base is situated in the northern hamlet of Missinipe on Otter Lake in central Saskatchewan. Recently upgraded, the Missinipe base services the majority of Osprey’s operations in addition to providing crew accommodation. Missinipe is situated on the Churchill River system, one of Saskatchewan’s most widely utilized and accessed rivers from a recreational perspective, particularly canoeing.

A smaller base, in LaRonge, in addition to a satellite base in Northeastern Saskatchewan in Points North Landing, west of Wollaston Lake, round out the operation.

Most of all, Osprey Wings is highly regarded in Saskatchewan with a long and loyal client base, an incredible value to the next operators of this airline.

Own Your Own Airline

While flight operations continue throughout the year, most of the fleet is operated on floats throughout the spring, summer, and fall, only starting in mid-May and ending in late October. Limited fleets are prepped for winter operations, with the winter season commencing in January.

Most of Osprey Wings’ business is generated through tourism and forestry, with mining, local and Indigenous travel and contracts making up the balance. Cargo movement is a significant revenue generator as well with over 2,000,000 lbs. transported every year.

The fleet of 9 aircraft have a total flight time average of around 2,000 hours, making Osprey Wings an incredible opportunity for those in aviation, or an investment in Saskatchewan.
