Kirkfield O'Byrne Ranch: A Historic Gem in the Kawartha Lakes Region

Kirkfield OByrne Ranch Hero

A 363-acre property that is rich in Canadian history and primed for future opportunity.

In the heart of the Kawartha Lakes, just 1.5 hours north-east of Toronto, lies a historic gem known as the Kirkfield O'Byrne Ranch. This property spans 363 acres and boasts over 7,000 feet of pristine lakefront along Canal Lake. Beyond its natural beauty, the history of this land is linked to the legacy of a prominent Canadian figure, Senator Patrick Burns, politician, entrepreneur, and co-founder of the Calgary Stampede.

An Accessible Wildness Oasis

The Kirkfield O'Byrne Ranch is a blend of natural landscapes and development potential. The Ranch is in an ecologically rich area with excellent fishing, abundant wildlife, and incredible landscapes. It is also a paradise for those who love to fill their time with leisure activities such as swimming, boating, and hiking.

The property is strategically located on the Trent-Severn Waterway, with proximity to the Kirkfield lock, making it a haven for boating enthusiasts.

It is rare for a paradise oasis like Kirkfield O’Byrne Ranch to be only 1.5-hours northeast of Toronto and conveniently accessible via municipally maintained roads close to urban amenities.

Untapped Potential

The property's zoning and official plan are currently geared towards agriculture and rural activities, with the potential for single-family residences. However, ongoing reviews at both the local and provincial levels could open doors for more extensive development, allowing subdivision and other land-use changes.

The Colliers Advantage

Colliers advisors Mark Lester, Senior Vice President, Unique Properties, and Matthew Johnson, Senior Vice President are no stranger to representing spectacular properties, particularly in this region. With extensive experience in unique real estate listings, complemented by intimate knowledge of the area, Mark and Matthew worked with the Burns family to showcase this legacy property.

A History Unlike Any Other

The Kirkfield O'Byrne Ranch has a unique historical connection. It was the childhood homestead of Senator Patrick Burns, a prominent Canadian businessman, philanthropist, and politician. Born as Patrick O'Byrne in 1856 to Irish immigrants, his family name was later shortened to Burns. The family settled in Kirkfield, where Burns spent his formative years.

In 1890, Burns moved to Calgary, Alberta, and established P. Burns and Company, a meatpacking and livestock company that became one of Canada's largest. He played a pivotal role in founding the Calgary Stampede and contributed significantly to the development of Western Canada.

Appointed to the Canadian Senate in 1931, Burns continued his influential work until his passing in 1937. His legacy endures as a visionary entrepreneur and humanitarian. The O'Byrne family, descendants of Patrick Burns, still own the original homestead, using the land for cattle grazing and recreation.

The Kirkfield O'Byrne Ranch is more than just a piece of real estate; it's a piece of Canadian history with a promising future. Whether you're an investor, nature enthusiast, or history buff, this hidden gem invites clients with imagination to write its next chapter in history.
